Description
Shams-ud-din Iltutmish. 1211-1236. BI jital (16 mm, 3.5 g). Mint: Lahore. Stylized horseman right, with Nagari legend (Sri) Hamirah around / Arabic legend al-Sultan al-mu 'azzam/ Iltutmish/ al-sultan. Robert Tye, Jitals, 376.5. Scarce and choice. Nearly very fine.
Iltutmish was the third sultan of the so-called Slave Dynasty. He consolidated the new Islamic sultanate in India after the death of his predecessor Qutb-ud-din Aibak. Iltutmish successfully stopped the rampaging Mongols from entering the Indian subcontinent. Iltutmish was also the first sultan to die of natural causes.
