Description

Rana Sanga. 1484-1527. Æ quarter falus (14 mm, 1.70 g). Nagari legend Sri Ra(na San)grama Sa(ha) / garbled Arabic legend. Goron & Goenka, The Coins of the Indian Sultanates, M266. This quarter denomination is rated as RR (Very Rare) by Goron & Goenka. Very rare. Fine.

The great hero of the Rajputs, Rana Sanga, led the Rajput confederacy against the Mughal invader Babur at the Battle of Khanua in 1527. At a crucial point in the 10-hour long battle, the Rana was wounded and knocked unconscious on his horse, leading to a panic in the Rajput army. This turned the tide in the favour of the Mughals and gave the fledgling Mughal empire a strong foothold in north India. Rana Sanga died shortly afterwards.
