Description

ROMAN EMPIRE; Lucilla, wife of Lucius Verus. Circa 164 AD. Æ Sestertius (20.42 gm; 30 mm). LVCILLAE AVG – ANTONINI AVG F Draped bust r., hair in waves and coiled up in a chignon at back of head. Rev. PIE – TAS / S – C Pietas, draped, veiled and diademed, standing l., strewing with her outstretched r. hand incense out of a box held in her l. over garlanded altar. RSC 54; BMC M. Aurelius 1161; RIC M. Aurelius 1756. Lovely strike on a nice broad flan. Light smoothing on the field. Choice EF. Nice green patina. Very rare. "Lucilla was the second of six daughters born to the emperor Marcus Aurelius and his wife Faustina II. She was a twin of Titus Aurelianus Antoninus, but he died within a year of their birth. When the emperor Antoninus Pius died in 161 and was succeeded by Lucilla’s father and his co-heir Lucius Verus, Lucilla was betrothed to Verus in a gesture meant to tie the two emperors lienage as well as their collective Imperial duties".
