A nice Roman gold earring with cameo, mid-3rd Century AD, the ellipsoid shield with a border resembling a twisted wire, with evenly spaced openings between it and the sides of the bezel, within which is set a sardonyx cameo depicting the bust of a woman wearing a chiton, her hair drawn back in tight rows and coiled into a plait which is held up against the back of her head - a typical mid-3rd century hairstyle. In the lower part of the shield there is a horizontal trapezium-shaped plate which have attached to it the three pendants, each moving freely, and fluted, the outer two with pearls. The wire is S-shaped and attached to the back of the shield. L: 1 5/8" (4.2 cm). Intact and a very attractive piece.
