Description

A beautiful Maya Swimmer bowl from El Tazumal, El Salvador, c. 550 - 900 AD. This round-bottom example is 6-1/8" diameter and 3" deep. In addition to the two elaborately detailed Underworld figures, there is a series of nicely detailed Copador glyphs adorning the rim. The interior has a band of large Copador glyphs around a central Lamat glyph, which represents the eighth day of the ceremonial calendar and is associated with the Heavenly Dragon. The theme of this type of vessel is thought to relate to the story in Maya mythology recounting the journey of the Hero Twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque through Xibalba, the Maya Underworld. Intact, with expected mineral deposits and root marks present.

Cf. Schmidt "Maya", page 646. Ex Zelenya estate. Value range: $750 - $900
