Description

ABBASIDS DYNASTY, Al Ma’mun. (813-833 AD). AR Dirhem (3.18 gm; 26 mm). Samarkand mint, year 202 AH. obverse: Phrase at the center “ Lellah, Mohammad Rasool al-Allah, Al Ma’mun Khalifat-Allah,mama amre be Alamir al-Reza, valiahd al Moslemin, Ali ibn Musa ibn Ali ibn Abi-Talib, Dhu 'l-Ri'asatayn. Mint noted in the inner circle: Samarqand or Samarkand, year 202 AH. Considered to be one of the most important Islamic coins of all time specially for the Shia branch of Islam indicating Ma’mun selecting the Shia leader and the eight Imam Reza as heir apparent. The tile “Dhu 'l-Ri'asatayn” meaning “leader of civil and military affairs” was also given to Ma’mun’s grand Vizir “Zadan Farrokh e- Sarakhsi” also known as Fadl ibn Sahl. Eventully both Fadl and Reza fell victim to Ma’mun’s political insecurities and fear of being removed from power. Album 224, Tabatabai/Vasiq 205. Lovely strike on a nice full flan. Choice EF. Nice original find patina. Extremely Rare.
