Description

SELEUKID KINGS, Seleukos I Nikator. 312-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.12 gm; 28 mm). Uncertain mint in western Asia Minor, ca. 300-281 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin headdress / Zeus enthroned left, holding Nike bearing wreath and scepter; forepart of pegasus in left field. Scarce. SC -; SCO -; HGC 9, -. A completely unpublished new issue for Seleukos I, and of superb style. While the pegasos forepart immediately brings to mind Lampsakos, the overall style does not fit. The coin is certainly from a mint in western Asia minor (Pergamene school), and struck after 301 BC. Lovely style. Well struck on a nice broad flan. Choice AU. Nice old cabinet toning. Rare.
