THRACE, Philippopolis. Elagabalus. 218-222 AD. Æ Medallion (23.22 gm; 36 mm). Commemorating the Pythian Games. Radiate and cuirassed bust right, viewed from the back / Prize crown containing five prize balls set on agonistic table; below, palm and urn. Cf. Moushmov 377; Cf. Varbanov 1396. Struck to celebrate the Kendrisian-Pythian Games which were staged in honor of the Thracian god Kendrisos, who was equated with Apollo. Lovely strike on a nice broad medallic flan. Some minor smoothing on the obverse and reverse fields. Green patina. Choice EF. Rare.
