PTOLEMAIC KINGDOM. Cleopatra VII Thea, 51-30 BC. AR Tetradrachm (13.77 gm), yr. 22 (31/30). Diademed head of Ptolemy / Eagle standing with palm at shoulder and headdress of Isis in front. SNG.Cop.414. Toned VF. Rare. Last coin of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Issued as her forces led by Marc Antony were defeated at the battle of Actium on Sept. 2, 31 BC When Octavian arrived in 30 BC, she chose suicide rather than surrender Egypt to Rome. Her hopes that her son Caesarion would succeed her were dashed when the boy was murdered by Octavian. Egypt was absorbed into the Roman Empire.
