Description

Britain, Gallo-Belgic imports. Morini. Ca. 60-30/25 B.C. AV 1/4 stater (12 mm, 1.42 g). Uniface Tree type. Plain, as made / Tree-like object above curved line. Delestrée & Tache 251; ABC 43; Van Arsdell 69-3; SCBC 10. Very fine.

From the KJG Collection of British Celtic Coins. Ex CNG private treaty sale (21 April 1992).

The Morini were a sea peoples living on the coastal plain between Bruges (Belgium) in the north and Étaples (France) in the south. There are several varieties of these gold quarter staters, often referred as Boat Tree issues, although the precise identity of the types is unclear. This later type has a plain obverse instead of the usual boat and men as seen on the earlier issue, ABC 40.
