Description

Britain, Southern Region. Regni & Atrebates. Commios. Ca. 50-25 B.C. AV 1/4 stater (9 mm, 1.22 g, 6 h). Commios A type. A inscribed on a plain field / Horse with ladder mane left; above, solar motif; below, rings. ABC 1031; Van Arsdell 353-5; BMC -; SCBC 67. Choice very fine.

From the KJG Collection of British Celtic Coins. Ex Rudd 137 (September 2014), 12.

If the obverse is rotated 180 degrees, the letter A (or perhaps AT monogram) becomes the archaic Greek letter digamma, which is how the obverse is described in SCBC. Caesar made Commios king of the Atrebates in Gaul, so possibly it is an A or AT monogram, an abbreviation for his Gallic kingdom.
