Description

Britain, Southern Region. Regni & Atrebates. Tincomarus. Ca. 25 B.C.-A.D. 10 AR unit (11 mm, 1.27 g, 12 h). Tincomarus Cernunnos type. Facing horned head / TIN-C, bull charging left, head facing. ABC 1109; Van Arsdell 370; BMC 926-9; SCBC 86. Toned. Good very fine.

From the KJG Collection of British Celtic Coins. Ex Rudd 117 (May 2011), 22.

Facing head types, especially of gorgons, are commonly seen on Greek coins, from which the designs of most Celtic coins ultimately derive. However, the facing head here has horns, which suggests that it is not a gorgon at all but rather Cernunnos, the horned Celtic god of fertility, life, animals, wealth, and the underworld.
