Description

Britain, Southern Region. Regni & Atrebates. Eppillus. Ca. A.D. 1-15. AV 1/4 stater (9 mm, 1.18 g, 6 h). Eppillus Calleva Daisy type. CELLE[V]; above and below, stars / [E]PPI above, dog or lion running right; above, ring; below, pellet-daisy. ABC 1151; Van Arsdell 408; BMC 1002-5; SCBC 96. Extremely rare. Very fine.

From the KJG Collection of British Celtic Coins. Ex Rudd 146 (15 May 2016), 12; Dr. Lawrence A. Adams Collection (CNG 100, 7 October 2015), 1045, purchased privately from G. Schinke in June 1988.

Eppillus claimed to be a son of Commios, and kicked his elder(?) brother Tincomarus out of the Atrebatic half of the kingdom to rule alone, styling himself as king of Calleva. Additionaly, Eppillus took control of the Cantiaci in Kent. This quarter stater is the much scarcer variety having a ring above the animal on the reverse. The more commonly found variety (ABC 1148) lacks this ring. Both varieties are rare, this being by far the scarcer of the two.
