Description

Britain, Southern Region. Regni & Atrebates. Eppillus. Ca. A.D. 1-15. AV 1/4 stater (9 mm, 1.20 g, 6 h). Eppillus Pegasus type. EPPIL/COM F in two lines / Pegasus flying right; below, pellet in ring. ABC 1154; Van Arsdell 435; BMC 1010-15; SCBC 98. Well struck. Good very fine.

From the KJG Collection of British Celtic Coins. Ex CNG 63 (21 May 2003), 1914.

The authors of ABC note that provenances of the Eppillus Pegasus type suggest that it may have formed part of the Calleva coinage, although it has traditionally been classified as a Kentish issue. The legend on the obverse, EPPIL COM F, proclaims Epillus as being a son of Commios, although this may have been a spurious claim made simply to bolster his regime.
