Description

Britain, Southern Region. Regni & Atrebates. Verica. Ca. A.D. 10-40. AR minim (8 mm, 0.24 g, 3 h). Verica Wine Cup type. REX, wine cup / [V]ER[IC]A COMMI F, aquila (Roman legionary eagle) right. ABC 1331; Van Arsdell 563; BMC 1572-8; SCBC 159. Very rare. Toned. Very fine.

From the KJG Collection of British Celtic Coins. Ex Rudd 79 (January 2005), 42.

As already mentioned on the pine-cone wand types of Verica in this sale, the symbolism of the wine cup on the obverse is Dionysiac and perhaps suggests the British taste for Greek vintages. The reverse shows marked Roman influence. Although the type is described as an ""eagle right"" in both ABC and SCBC, it is actually an aquila or Roman legionary eagle, the handle of which can been seen on the present coin below the eagle.
