Description

Britain, East Anglian Region. Iceni. Early uninscribed issues. Mid-1st century B.C. AR unit (14 mm, 1.14 g, 7 h). Norfolk God (moustache) type. Mustachioed male head right; behind, grain ear (not evident); before, two trefoils / Horse with cabled mane right; above, pelta with tricorne; below, lozenge with concave sides and pellet at each corner. ABC 1567; Van Arsdell 792; BMC 3605-759; SCBC 434. Well centered and struck, lightly toned. Choice very fine.

The head and grain ear of the obverse are borrowed from the Roman denarii of L. Roscius Fabatus (Crawford 412/1), which were also extensively imitated in Central Europe on coins of the Eravisci, a highly cultured Celtic tribal group inhabiting Transdanubia who used Roman Republican denarii as prototypes for their own coins.
