Description

Britain, North Eastern Region. Corieltavi. Early uninscribed issues. Ca. 50 B.C.-A.D. 1 AV 1/4 stater (14 mm, 0.99 g). Lindsey Scyphate type. Highly stylized boar right, represented by mass of lines and dashes / Large S or reversed S-shape surrounded by pellets. ABC 1773; Van Arsdell -; BMC 3189-92; SCBC 395. Rare. Pale gold. Nearly very fine.

The Corieltavi were a large, wealthy northeastern tribe who were highly advanced and who, according to Van Arsdell, ""used complex privy marks on their coins for die control, weight specification and perhaps even identification of metallurgical content."" Boars feature prominently on the silver units of the Corieltavi.
