Description

Britain, North Thames Region. Catuvellauni. Tasciovanus. Ca. 25 B.C.-A.D. 10 AR unit (13 mm, 1.16 g). Tasciovanus X-Box type. V-E-R-L, Crossed wreaths, one curved, with box at center containing an X / TAS, boar charging right; below, star. ABC 2628; Van Arsdell 1796; BMC 1661-2; SCBC 236. Very rare.

From the KJG Collection of British Celtic Coins. Ex Rudd 141 (19 July 2015), 37; Woburn Sands, Buks., December 2012.

Tasciovanus was one of the greatest kings of Iron Age Britain, only overshadowed by his son, Cunobelinus. His grave, if it is indeed his and not the grave of another important royal, at Lexden, Colchester, contained a medallion of Augustus, often a diplomatic gift bestowed by the emperor of Rome himself. This suggests he likely had close ties with the Roman Empire.
