Britain, North Thames Region. Catuvellauni & Trinovantes. Cunobelinus. Ca. A.D. 8-41. AR unit (12 mm, 1.20 g, 6 h). Cunobelinus Flower type. Camulodunum. CA-MV, flower / CVNO in exergue, horse prancing right, head tunred to look back. ABC 2885; Van Arsdell 2047; BMC 1867A; SCBC 305. Extremely rare. Toned, light porosity. Very fine.

Cuobelinus was the greatest of all late Iron Age kings of Britain, and united the tribes of the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes after conquering the latter. He seems to have conquered Camulodunum and been quite proud of the achievement: no fewer than 44 of the 75 coin types he issued have the name inscribed on them, as does the coin offered here.
