Description

SASANIAN KINGS. Khosrau II, 590-628 AD. AR Drachm (3.12 gm; 29 mm). Sunrise 978. Obverse, bust of Khsrau II turning right, overstrike by Pahlavi phrase or name "ChWLAWL(a)HCh" on the 4th quarter, reverse, fire altar with attendants, mint BBA (Court at Ctesiphon), year 35, Pahlavi phrase "ChWLAWL(a)HCh" most likely a reference to the city of "Jalula" or "Jalwla (Arabic)" or "Celewla (Kurdish)" near the present boarder of Iran and Iraq next to Kurdistan and Kirmanshahan provinces of Iran. The city was a major gate to the Interior of Persian Empire and area where the Persian forces regrouped after the fall of Ctesiphon. Moslem armies under the command of Hashim Ibn Uthba led the attack against the Persian forces under the command of highly skillful but very old Persian General Mihran who was defeated after a harsh and bloody battle. The victory in Jalula opened the road to the northern Mesopotamia and Persian interior for further Moslem conquest. Extremely rare due to the counter-mark name which might have been a commemoration of the battle or siege of the city that followed the battle and lasted for nearly a half a year. Choice VF. Extremely Rare.
