Description

ISLAMIC, Byzantine Imitation in Persia under the Umayyads. Anonymous issue. Æ (1.34 gm; 20 mm). Possible to be a Christian post-Sasanian fals. This coin has been classified as both Arab Sasanian and Arab Byzantine. Obverse: Byzantine as well as Khalif style portrait facing forward, Cross at 9 o'clock, blundered legend from 11 o'clock all around. Reverse: Large letter "M" with a cross located at the top of "M", 2 crescent, outward facing at the bottom of each leg of letter "M" and framing the letters "LOO" or "LOD"(Possible Mint place). Lod is currently in Israel. Obliterated letters to the left of letter "M". Gyselen-Annex Type Alpha -. Lovely strike on a nice broad medallic flan. Brown-reddish patina. Choice Good VF.
Of the highest rarity and great interest. "This is a fascinating and extremely rare issue as it shows strong Christian iconography as well as legends in Pahlavi and Greek. The Christianity's branch of Persia called "Nestorians" had to cut all relations with the Roman and then Byzantine churches to remain acceptable to the Sasanian administration to be allowed to practice. Given the pseudo Byzantine iconography and the fact that during the Perso-Byzantine wars of 620s and land that changed hands, this coin more than likely was issued by a transient Christian community (soldiers, relocated population) within the larger context of tolerant Umayyad rule".
