[Northwick]. Sotheby, S. Leigh and John Wilkinson. Catalogue of the First Portion of the Northwick Collection of Coins and Medals Comprising The Greek Series. Sotheby, S. Leigh and John Wilkinson. Catalogue of the First Portion of the Northwick Collection of Coins and Medals Comprising The Greek Series. (London, 5 December 1859). 163 pages, 1633 lots. Bound with: Catalogue of the Second Portion of the Northwick Collection of Coins and Medals Comprising The Roman Series. (London, 26 March 1860). 59 pages, 795 lots. Both are post sale copies, hand ruled and priced with buyer's names. Buyer's names include the likes of Bunbury, Eastwood, Lincoln, Rollin, Hoffman, the British Museum etc... The pair bound in quarter leather with cloth boards, spine chipped and front and back boards separated. Internally the pages are very nice with only a trace of scattered foxing and the pages are not brittle at all. Very rare, as are all early auction catalogs.
The Greek portion of this sale realized 8568 Pounds, the most expensive coin being the Cleopatra Thea tetradrachm sold to the British Musuem and illustrated in BMC Seleukid Kings, pl. xxiii, 1 which sold for 240 Pounds. The Roman portion 3320 Pounds, the most expensive coin being a 501 grain silver medallion of Julia Domna that sold for 251 Pounds to Addington. Just as a point of reference, an Eid Mar denarius sold for 6 Pounds, a Port of Ostia Sestertius of Nero sold for 8 pounds and a portrait Aureus of Julius Caesar sold for 15 Pounds. A fascinating look into mid-19th century numismatics.
