Description

TETRICUS II. 270-273 AD. Æ "Antoninianus" (28mm - 12.86 g). C PIV ESV TETRICVS [CAES], radiate and draped bust right / S-AL[V]S AVG, Salus standing left, holding sceptre and feeding serpent from patera. Cf. RIC V pt. 2, 267. VF, dark brown patina. Overstruck on a Faustina I As, with remnants of a her portrait on the obverse.

Ex Henry Platt Hall Collection (Glendining's, 16-21 November 1950), lot 1949.

This coin was called a Medallion in Platt Hall, though what it is is anyone's guess. It may even be a modern creation of some sort though if someone could track down a die link to an ancient specimen that would answer that question. It is being sold "As Is" and we'll let the buyer call it whatever he wants. Interesting in any case with a good pedigree.
