Lot 236: ANTIQUITIES, Chimu Griton

A rare Chimu zoomorphic griton effigy from Peru, ca. 1100 – 1450 AD. The Chimu typically portrayed mucas in this manner, although other Pre-Columbian cultures depicted these screamers in human form, as well as a variety of other animals. This example is 6-1/2” high and is depicted in an unusual position for Chimu gritons, with the legs molded in high relief along the chamber. The small handle indicates its functional use as a container for water ceremonies. In perfect condition, with good mineral deposits. Ex Sarmiento collection. Value range: $400 - $500
