KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander I, 498-454 BC. Silver Oktadrachm (28.44 gm; 29 mm). circa 479-475. Horseman, wearing kausia and chlamys, holding two javelins and walking slowly to right behind horse bridled right / ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟ around quadripartite square in relief; all within rectangular incuse. Asyut 152 var.; Raymond group II, pl. VI, 45-51; SNG ANS 22. Very rare and undoubtedly among the finest known examples of this impressive issue. A spectacular, boldly struck coin, beautifully toned and of splendid late archaic style. Choice Extremely fine. From an old Swiss collection, privately purchased from Spink in the 1980s.
