Description

SALONINA, wife of Gallienus. Augusta, 254-268 AD. Antoninianus (22mm - 3.74 g). Antioch mint. Struck 267 AD. SALONINA AVG, diademed and draped bust right on a crescent / VENV-S AVG, Venus standing left holding helmet and leaning on shield; PXV. RIC V 86 var.; Göbl 1671 var. Near EF, almost fully silvered.

This type usually shows Venus holding a long transverse spar in her left hand. This coin shows no trace of the spear on either side of Venus' body, and perhaps only a tiny trace of a spear extending out of her hand to her hip.
