Description

Lycaonia, Hyde. Faustina II. Augusta, A.D. 147-175. Æ (20 mm, 7.55 g, 6 h). ΦΑV?ΤЄΙΝ-Α ?ЄΒΑ?ΤΗ, diademed and draped bust of Faustina II right / ΥΔΗ[?] Ι-ЄΡΑC Κ-ΟΙΝ ΛΥΚΑΟ, bearded river-god reclining left, holding reed and resting on overturned amphora from which water flows; in water, fish. Von Aulock, Lykaoniens 85-8 (same dies as 85); SNG BN 2266; RPC temp. 7243. Extremely rare - the fifth known example. Green patina with sandy deposits. Good very fine.

Von Aulock lists just eight coins from this mint, four of which are this type of Faustina II, and two each of both Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. RPC publishes one additional coin of Marcus Aurelius and two of Lucius Verus, but no further examples of Faustina II. Of the four coins of Faustina, all are noted as being in museum collections. Thus the present offering presents a singular opportunity to acquire an extremely rare coin from an extremely rare mint. Additionally, this coin is only slightly inferior to one other, making it the second finest known.
