Description

Aelius. Caesar, A.D. 136-138. Æ as (25 mm, 8.95 g, 6 h). Rome, under Hadrian, A.D. 137. L AELIVS CAESAR, bare head of Aelius right / [TR POT] COS II around, [P]ANNO-NIA/S C in two lines across field, Pannonia standing facing, head left, holding vexillum and pulling fold of drapery across legs. RIC 1071; BMC 1936. Dark green and brown patina, deposits and slight roughness. Nearly very fine.

The province of Pannonia personified on the reverse of this coin commemorates Hadrian's appointment of Aelius as Governor of Pannonia.
