Description

Philip I. A.D. 244-249. Fourrée antoninianus (20 mm, 4.77 g, 1 h). Contemporary imitation. Copying Rome, ca. A.D. 246. IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Philip I right / P M TR P III COS P P, Felicitas standing facing, head left, holding caduceus and cornucopiae. Cf. RIC 3; cf. RSC 124. Lustrous with just a couple of spots of core exposed at edge. Choice extremely fine.

Although the style is official, the fact that this coin is fourrée belies the fact that it is imitative. This leads to the conjecture that perhaps it was made by an unscrupulous mint worker under clandestine circumstances at the mint using official dies as opposed to simply being a product of an unofficial mint.
