Description

Lucania, Thourioi. Ca. 443-400 B.C. AR nomos (21 mm, 7.65 g). Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with wreath / ΘOYPIΩ[N], bull advancing right; in exergue, fish right. SNG ANS 900-14; HN Italy 1775. Light porosity on reverse. Good fine.

The Stoecklin Family Collection was formed over manygenerations beginning with Sebastian Ros, who was born in Slovenia in 1839 and workedas a civil engineer. He found ancient coins as he helped to lay railway linesthroughout the Balkans. Walter Friedrich Stoecklin was born in Bulgaria in 1888and became a medical doctor working for the Red Cross during the Balkan Wars in1913, when he met his future wife, Sebastian Ros’s daughter, Jerica, who was anurse. Walter and Jerica had a son, Walter Mirko Stoecklin, who collected coinswith his father and also become a medical doctor in Switzerland 1950. Dr. W. F.Stoecklin died in 1975, and Walter Mirko Stoecklin died in 1981, which ended theStoecklin family collection.
