Phrygia, Laodikeia. Ca. 133-67 B.C. Æ (21 mm, 9.70 g, 11 h). Diademed head of Aphrodite right / ΛΑΟΔ[I]-ΚΕΩΝ, double filleted cornuacopiae. SNG von Aulock 3803; SNG Munich 344; SNG Copenhagen 500; BMC 32ff; HGC 7, 736. Dark brown patina. Boldly struck. Very fine.
The church at Laodikeia in Phrygia was one of the seven churches mentioned in the book of Revelation, where Jesus instructs John of Patmos to write on a scroll that which he sees and send it to the churches of Ephesos, Smyrna, Pergamon, Thyateira, Sardes, Philadelphia, and Laodikeia (Revelation 1:11), collectively also known as the Seven Churches of the Apocalypse. In the biblical context, the church meant the congregants of the local Christian community, not a specific building. The church of Laodikeia was described as "lukewarm and insipid (to God)" (Revelation 3:14-22).
