Description

A fine Maya Swimmer bowl from El Tazumal, El Salvador, c. 400 - 800 AD. This flat-bottom example has a 7-3/4" diameter and is 3-1/4" deep. In addition to the two elaborately detailed Underworld figures, there is a series of nicely detailed Copador glyphs adorning the rim. The interior has large deity head glyphs, somewhat eroded due to pitting from the contents it was buried with. The theme of this type of vessel is thought to relate to the story in Maya mythology recounting the journey of the Hero Twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque through Xibalba, the Maya Underworld. Intact, with good mineral deposits.
Cf. Peter Schmidt "Maya", page 646. Ex Tribal Treasures Gallery. Value range: $650 - $750.
