Description
ACHAEMENID EMPIRE. Time of Artaxerxes II - Artaxerxes III. circa 375-340 BC. AR Siglos (5.30 gm; 14 mm). Sardes mint, Persian king or hero in kneeling-running stance right, holding dagger and bow, quiver over shoulder; Interesting "Pelican" standing left counter mark / Patterned incuse punch. Carradice Type IV; group C, pl. 15,49; BMC 176; Sunrise 34. We have seen many different countermarks on these Siglos, but this is the first one we've seen with a pelican. Choice VF. Very Rare.
