Description

Intaglio Oval Silver Plaquette from Clazomenae, Ionia, Depicting Septimius Severus, Caracalla, and Geta. AD 199-211. Laureate, draped bust of Septimius Severus left between laureate and draped busts of Caracalla on left and Geta on right; behind Geta, small figure of city goddess standing left, wearing polos; above, retrograde inscription in three lines, naming the emperors: AVT K L CEP CEOVHPOC PE / K M AV ANTWNEINOC K P / CEP GE-TAC; below, retrograde inscription in two lines, naming a city quaestor: KLAZO TAMIEVONTOC / AIL. ALEXANDROV (under Aelius Alexander, Treasurer at Clazomenae). Width 52 mm; height: 43 mm; 2 mm thick; weight: 50.74 gm. This remarkable item was quite probably attached to a backing and used as an official seal of the treasurer of Clazomenae. Its precise purpose is unknown..Nice original green patina.
