Description

MACEDON. Aphytis. Circa 360 BC. Æ 18mm (5.45 g). Three-quarter facing head of Zeus-Ammon, slightly left / Kantharos. SNG ANS 211; SNG Copenhagen 124; BMC Macedonia pg. 61, 1. VF, dark brown patina with some red deposits, some roughness.

According to Pausanias (III.18.3) Aphytis was celebrated for its temple of Zeus Ammon, and according to Xenophon (Hell.V.3.19) the city also had a temple dedicated to the worship of Dionysos, referred to on this coin by the kantharos.
