GAIUS, "Caligula". 37-41 AD. Æ Sestertius (35mm - 24.12 g). Rome mint. C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS P M TR POT, PIETAS in exergue, Pietas, veiled, seated left and holding patera in extended right hand, left elbow resting on small facing statue / DIVO-AVG, S-C across field, Gaius sacrificing before hexastyle temple; one attendant leading bull to altar, the other holding a patera. RIC I 36; BMCRE 41; BN 51. Near VF, brown surfaces, rough, fields smoothed, perhaps some wax or other substance on the surfaces to make the coin appear smoother.
