Bruttium, Carthaginian occupation. Ca. 215-205 B.C. AR 1/4 shekel (14 mm, 1.54 g, 4 h). Second Punic War issue. Uncertain mint, possibly Lokris. Wreathed head of Tanit left / Horse standing right. Jenkins L2; Robinson pl. VII, 3; HN Italy 2020. Choice extremely fine.
Although Carthage supplied coinage to Hannibal throughout the Second Punic War, the Carthaginian leader opened several mints in both Sicily and Italy to strike coinage on an as-needed basis. This rare issue of Hanniballic quarter shekels was struck at a mint operating somewhere in Bruttium, the region of southwestern Italy that was first to defect to Hannibal shortly after the Roman disaster at Cannae. Robinson felt that the mint was located at Lokris, but this is disputed by Rutter and there are other likely candidates. This Bruttian issue is much scarcer than the usual quarter shekels minted at Carthage that were struck to finance Hannibal''s campaigns (see MAA 78), and is also significantly more refined from an artistic perspective.
