Description
GAIUS CAESAR, Grandson of Augustus, 20 BC - 4 AD. AR Denarius (3.67 gm) 17 BC. Bare head within wreath / Candelabrum within wreath. RIC.540(R2). RSC.2. Sear.1749. Toned VF, old scuffs. Very Rare. Struck to commemorate the Ludi Saeculares in 17 BC. There remains debate whether the bust is of Augustus himself or his grandson Gaius. The obviously youthful bust seems more likely to Gaius than the aged Augustus, so we follow the attribution by D. Sear of this issue to Gaius.
