Description
Didius Julianus. A.D. 193. AR denarius (17 mm, 2.56 g, 12 h). Rome. IMP CAES M DID IVLIAN AVG, laureate head of Didius Julianus right / CON-CORD M[I]LIT, Concordia standing facing, head left, holding legionary eagle and vexillum. RIC 1; BMC 2-3; RSC 2. Minor smoothing in field before face, light porosity. Very fine.
An extremely wealthy senator, Didius Julianus purchased his elevation to the imperial throne at an auction held by Praetorian Guard. The dire shame associated with these disgraceful events set off a series of revolts in several parts of the Roman world, with Septimius Severus eventually becoming the successful contender after much bloodshed.
