Anglo-Saxon. Aethelred II. 978-1016. AR penny (20 mm, 1.77 g, 9 h). Crux type. Wareham, ca. 991-997. Byrshige, moneyer. + ÆDELRÆD REX A(NG)L(OR)X, bare-headed and draped bust of Aethelred II left; before, scepter with cross pommée / + ByRHSIGE M-O PER, voided cross with C-R-V-X in angles. SCBI 7 (Copenhagen) 1297 (same dies); North 770; Seaby 1148. Rare. Good very fine.
