CRETE, Knossos. 360-320 BC. AR Stater (10.47 gm). Wreathed head of Demeter / The Labyrinth in swastika pattern with star at center. Svor.45. SNG.Lock.2531 Toned VF+, old scuff, neat c/m behind head. Rare. Refers to the maze built by Minos to house the Minotaur (half-bull, half-man, the offspring of Neptune and his wife, Pasiphaë) who was fed youths extracted as tribute from the Athenians. Theseus arrived as such a victim, but he killed the Minotaur with the aid of Minos’ daughter, Ariadrne, who had fallen in love with him.
