The first coins in Britain were imported from across the Channel, from northwestern Gaul, beginning in about the third century B.C. and lasting for around a century and a half. The reasons why these coins were imported is not fully understood at this time, but illustrates the close political and social interactions between the Celtic peoples in Britain and on the continent.
