Description

Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander III 'the Great'. 336-323 B.C. AR drachm (17 mm, 4.25 g, 12 h). Kolophon, posthumously on Philip III, ca. 322-319 B.C. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress / ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, caduceus; in outer right field, spear head . Price 1754. Pleasing iridescent toning, light cleaning marks on the obverse. Good very fine.

When CNG offered the coin in their sale 93, the noted that the ""reverse die used for this coin was originally used to strike the previous issue, Price 1753, with vertical barley grain below the throne. Here one can see the remnant of the barley grain after an attempt was made to 'erase' it in the die.""
