Description

CONSTANTINE I. 307-337 AD. Æ Follis (20mm - 2.55 g). Arles mint. Struck circa 324 AD (?). CONSTAN-TINVS AVG, laureate head right / PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG, camp-gate with no doors and two turrets, star above; ARLA. RIC VII -; LRBC -. Nice VF, dark grayish-green patina with some earthen deposits.

From the Zachary "Beast" Beasley Collection of Camp Gates.

Apparently the first camp gate issue and unrecorded in RIC. Voetter did include two coins of Constantius II with this mint mark from officina D (pg. 90). This cataloguer is a bit concerned with the Greek officina letters instead of the usual Latin officina marks found in Arles, but the style of this coin appears to be consistent with Arles.
