Description

LYDIA. Domitianopolis Sala. Domitian. 81-96 AD. Æ 27mm (10.68 g). Laureate bust right wearing aegis / Zeus Lydios standing left, holding eagle in right hand. RPC II 1341; SNG Copenhagen -; SNG von Aulock -; BMC -. VF, golden brown patina. Very Rare, only one specimen cited in RPC.

Sala appears to have issued coins for the first time in the reign of Domitian, after whom the city was named for a short time. On this coin for Domitian and for those of his wife Domitia, the city's name is DOMITIANOPOLEITWN CALHNWN. Coinage stope for awhile and resumes again under Trajan where the inscriptions drop Domitian's name and simply read CALHNWN. Coinage for this city continued to be struck until the reign of Severus Alexander.
