Description

ELAGABALUS. 218-222 AD. AR Denarius (20mm - 2.95 g). Rome mint. Struck 221 AD. IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate head right / P M TR P IIII COS III P P, Providentia standing left, holding wand over globe in right hand, cornucopia in left; star in left field. RIC IV 42 var. (star in left field); BMCRE 250 var. (same); RSC 189 var. (same). EF, lustrous, struck from clashed dies.

This obverse with the laureate head right is published only with the star in the right field of the reverse. When the star in in the left field as on this coin, all the published examples have a draped bust.
