Description

BOEOTIA. Thebes. Epaminodas, magistrate. 395-338 BC. AR Stater (21mm - 12.25 g). Struck 364-362 BC. Boeotian shield / Amphora; EP-PA, shield above. BCD 542; Hepworth 35; BMC 138. Near EF, lustrous, well centered, strike just a touch soft on amphora.

The identities of most of the magistrates on the coinage of Boeotia remain obscure. However, the magistrate abbreviated as EPPA or EPAM has been identified as the historical Epaminondas (see “Epaminondas’ Coinage,” in Proceedings of the 10th International Congress of Numismatics (London 1986), pg. 35-40), who successfully led the Boeotians against the invading Spartan army at the battle of Leuctra in 371 BC, thus ending nearly 300 years of Spartan military supremacy. In 362, Epaminondas would meet his death at the battle of Mantinea..
