Professor Dr. Hildebrecht Hommel (born 1899 in Munich; died 1996 in Ebenhausen) was a noted professor of Greek Philology in Heidelberg. Other areas of academic interest included Roman religion and, of course, ancient numismatics. In 1955 he began teaching at Eberhard-Karls-University Tübingen, where he founded the university’s chair of numismatics. In 1975 he donated his collection of 3884 Greek coins to the university, and it has since formed the basis of Tübingen’s Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum fascicules.
