Description
Thracian Kingdom. Rhoemetalces III, with Gaius Caligula. Ca. A.D. 38-46(?). Æ (16 mm, 3.93 g, 12 h). ΓΑΙΩ ΚΑΙ-ΣΑΡΟΣ, laureate head of Gaius Caligula left / ΒΑΣΙΛ-ΕΟΣ (retrograde), eagle standing right, head left, holding wreath in beak. Cf. RPC 1726 (obv. legend); Youroukova -. Extremely rare - just two specimens cited in RPC. Mottled green patina. Good very fine.
According to RPC, this coin was previously attributed to Judaea and Agrippa, but the style and die axis are those of Rhoemetalces. Our coin is slightly different than the specimens in RPC, which have the obverse legend ΓΑΙΩ ΚΑΙΣΑΡI.
