Lydia, Hierocaesarea. Pseudo-autonomous issue. 3rd century A.D. Æ (32 mm, 16.01 g, 6 h). ΔH-MOC, diademed head of Demos right / IEP-KAI-C-AP-EΩN, Artemis, drawing arrow from quiver at shoulder and holding bow, in biga of stags galloping right; below, two small flowers(?). SNG von Aulock -; SNG Copenhagen -; SNG Hunterian 1377; BMC -; LS 41 (citing the Hunterian specimen). Extremely rare with only one other specimen found in the major collections. Two-toned tan and brown patina with some earthen-green deposits. Flaw on cheek of Demos. Choice very fine.
Despite the flan flaw on the cheek of Demos, this coin is much superior to the Hunterian specimen, which is very worn. The Hunterian sylloge does not mention the two small flowers or clumps of vegetation below the stags, nor are they visible on the photograph of that coin. However, Imhoof-Blumer does mention them in Lydische Stadtmünzen, but then he cites only the coin in Hunterian. Perhaps this indicates that the Hunterian coin is slightly better in hand than it looks in the photographs in SNG Hunterian.
